This emergency report details three grave Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases in July2025 identified by JUWEYRIA Women Relief during their recent field visits to IDPs camps in Adaado, Galmudug. These incidents tragically underscore the severe vulnerabilities faced by displaced populations, particularly women and girls, and highlight critical gaps in protection and basic infrastructure within humanitarian settings.
Case 1: Rape and Murder of a Tea Vendor
Location: Adaado, near an IDP camp
Details: A deeply distressing incident involved a woman, a tea vendor, whose life was brutally cut short. She was found raped and murdered late at night while returning to her village near IDP camp (the newly built houses for durable solution) after closing her small business at a late night. Her body was discovered tragically in front of her makeshift home. This case highlights the extreme risks faced by women who, out of economic necessity, must operate in insecure environments, especially during hours of darkness. The lack of safe passage and adequate protection mechanisms for vulnerable individuals in and around IDP settlements contributed directly to this horrific outcome.
Case 2: Latrine Assault in Daryeel IDP Camp
Location: Daryeel IDP Camp, Adaado
Details: During a field visit to Daryeel IDP camp, JUWEYRIA Women Relief documented the case of a woman who was violently assaulted within the confines of her toilet facility. The perpetrator used a stone to inflict injuries upon her. Despite her wounds, she managed to escape and received medical attention at Adaado General Hospital, where she subsequently recovered. The assailant remains unidentified, primarily due to the complete absence of solar lights in the camp’s streets and surrounding areas. This lack of basic lighting infrastructure creates an environment of pervasive insecurity, enabling perpetrators to act with impunity and leaving residents, particularly women, exposed to grave dangers even within their supposed shelters.
Case 3: Rape near Karama IDP Camp
Location: Nearby Karama IDP Camp, Adaado
Details: Another critical case identified by JUWEYRIA Women Relief involved the rape of a woman residing in the Karama IDP camp. This victim was a new arrival, recently displaced by the devastating droughts in the Galgaduud region, which inherently heightened her vulnerability. The assault occurred in the immediate vicinity of the camp; an area also plunged into darkness due to the absence of solar lighting. This incident tragically illustrates how vulnerable the IDPs are. Humanitarian efforts must prioritize not only immediate relief but also the creation of safe and secure environments for those uprooted by crisis.
Conclusion: The cases documented by JUWEYRIA Women Relief in Adaado, Galmudug, serve as a stark reminder of the urgent humanitarian imperative to address GBV in IDP settings. The pervasive lack of adequate lighting emerges as a critical, yet addressable, risk factor enabling these heinous crimes. Humanitarian actors, local authorities, and the international community must collaborate to implement immediate and sustainable solutions, including the provision of solar lighting, enhanced community-based protection mechanisms, and robust accountability for perpetrators. Ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of displaced women and girls must remain at the forefront of all humanitarian responses.
